The problem is not new. I wonder if, perhaps it goes back to oppressive European regimes which required Jews to violate laws in order to survive?

My current Rebbe, a real Chassidish rebbe, encouraged some, but not all, of his followers to adopt elements of the Chassidic uniform. When I asked one of his intimates why he chose to press some and not others others, the response was "They need it." He was targeting those who might think "I look like a Chossid. What would my behavior make an observer believe about Chassidim?" This could work to elicit exemplary behavior or to attenuate inappropriate behavior. Either way - an improvement.JTnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097749014220347853.post-58978812745976881262013-01-13T12:19:43.521-05:002013-01-13T12:19:43.521-05:00Great post!

There is a huge controversy going on right now in one school, where they are trying meditation and yoga and some other things and allowing students to opt out of regular tefillah (aka not davening with a minyan, not putting on tefillin).

I think it is connected to the lack of spirituality in schools and just in the MO world in general (I'm sure other spectrum as well).

Something that is difficult to teach children, specially when many use rewards/punishments, is to do something because it is right, not because you will get rewarded for it or because someone is watching.

This post reminded me of one of my favorite Netivos Shalom on his introduction to Sefer Bereisheet. He asks a question on the very first Rashi of the Torah: Rashi doesn't fully answer his (R' Yitzhak's) question. Rashi answers why we need the creation story, but why do we need all of the story of the Avos BEFORE we even get the Torah? Because the foundation for Torah is middos.
