It can simply be that god created everything in his head in 7 days and then let the rollout take billions of years. Plus, I think it's false to think of "Torah matters" and "non-Torah matters" being so distinct and compartmentalized in the minds of the sages. Just take one example from R. Slifkin's latest post - here you have Chazal speaking about writing shemot Hashem onto a hyena skin as part of a remedy for rabies. Were they "right" about the shemot but "wrong" about the hyena?Atheodox Jewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06404924424040480039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097749014220347853.post-29773708788154687152013-12-01T05:25:47.279-05:002013-12-01T05:25:47.279-05:00I agree with everything you say and am disgusted b...I agree with everything you say and am disgusted by our flat-earthers. I mean, if Chazal really knew all of science, why don't we see them using electricity etc.

One thing that bothers me and that I suspect is one of the reasons for the close-minded view of many in the Yeshiva-world is that the fact is that much of Chazal's "best scientific knowledge of the day" is canonized in Shas and constitutes Torah and Limud Torah. Why would all of this have made it in to the Shas if it were only Chazal conveying what they and other scientists of the day incorrectly thought.

The answer is, of course, that we're dealing with human beings and the Shas was put together by human beings. But it does take some of the luster off Shas and ma'amaeri Chazal and kind of open's a Pandora's box regarding everything else said and written down by Chazal.

YSnoreply@blogger.com
