I had understood that Canadians don't really drink Molson, but merely export it, much like Australians and Foster's.

Well first remember that Molson is a company, not a specific beer. They have a couple that aren't bad and most of their sales come from being ubiquitous across the country.
Fortunately Canada has lots of great micro-breweries that put out some great stuff.
